POOPY ISLAND
Poopy Island (PI) was a two-week collaboration between myself and Sohee Kim (https://www.behance.net/skim26) while at Grin City Collective. We shared an interest in formal strategies employed in painting and installation, and how viewers use these to construct narratives and navigate spaces. This turned into an inquiry about what happens when photographs, landscapes, and found objects are constructed as paintings.
Golf and minigolf courses resemble formal paintings when viewed from an overhead perspective, simultaneously representing a perverse desire for sterilized landscapes associated with luxury and liesure. Viewers acted as patrons of our "world-wonder" themed miniature country club by playing with badly formed paper mache putters and balls.
Scattered throughout our installation/painting were references to nostalgia, success, and travel, partly parodying the ironic relationship between sightseeing and site destruction, and partly relieving this desire to experience places strange and new (to us) without destroying them in the same breath.
